How to Use The Assessment Tool Kit
Definitions
What is Assessment?
Assessment is the process of collecting and reviewing information from developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate ways and sources, to develop a deep understanding of what children know, understand, and can do.
The North American Division Early Childhood Developmental Learning Standards (ECDLS) are the basis for tracking progress.
What is the Purpose of an Assessment Toolkit?
An assessment tool kit provides teachers with developmentally age-appropriate resources to track progress of children as they advance through the ECDLS. Assessments enable teachers and parents to learn more about their children, track progress over time, plan for ongoing learning, and report effectively to each other.
Components of the Pre-Kindergarten Assessment Toolkit:
Who should use this assessment tool kit?
The assessment tool kit is designed to give Pre-Kindergarten teachers the materials to monitor each child’s developmental progress aligned with the ECDLS.
How can this assessment tool kit support student learning?
The results of the assessments, which include social-emotional levels, identifying learning styles and readiness skills, tell us what the children are thinking and doing. We can determine where they are developmentally and how we can further nurture their development and growth. Components of the tool kit will also promote effective communication with the parents.
To implement the usage of the Pre-Kindergarten Assessment Tool Kit, will teacher training be necessary?
Yes, on-going training will be provided via the North American Division Adventist Learning Community (ALC) as well as local conference/union professional development and support.
What is the North American Division Adventist Learning Community and how can it be used to support teachers?
The ALC is a Seventh-day Adventist online educational platform used to strengthen professionals through continuing education courses. Directors and teachers will have access to the ALC Pre-Kindergarten Tool kit training modules. These video modules will introduce and illustrate the various components of the tool kit and how to use it effectively to track the growth and development of children.
